EDEN EN EL SHORT SHORTS FILM FESTIVAL

Queridos amigos. Les comparto que mi cortometraje "Edén", uno de mis hijitos consentidos, está en Selección Oficial en el Short Shorts Film Festival México que arranca esta semana.

Si no lo han visto o si desean verlo de nuevo, hay cuatro proyecciones para su comodidad en cuatro sedes distintas:

* Jueves 4 de Septiembre, Cinemex WTC, 18:45 hrs,
* Sábado 6 de Septiembre, Cinemex Plaza Insurgentes, 12:00 hrs.
* Sábado 6 de Septiembre, Cinemex Altavista, 16:00 hrs.
* Martes 9 de Septiembre, Cineteca Nacional 16:00 hrs.

Como referencia, forma parte del programa número 1.
Me parece que al final de las cuatro proyecciones está contemplada una sesión de preguntas y respuestas con el público, así que si les late y tienen tiempo, ahí nos veremos!

FESTIVAL DE CINE DE MORELIA

Saludos. Como siempre, dándoles la más fresca información.

Hoy dieron a conocer la lista de películas seleccionadas para el Sexto Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia y me complace compartirles que mi cortometraje "Edén" es una de ellas.

La noticia me hace muy feliz porque Morelia está en mi Top 3 de los festivales donde uno se la pasa más chingón. Tengo muy chidos recuerdos del año pasado, nos dieron un trato increíble y vi muchos amigos. El año pasado participé con mi cortometraje "El gusano".
De verdad estoy muy contento de poder volver este año. Aunque siendo honesto, también estoy un poco decepcionado porque un par de amigos muy talentosos no quedaron seleccionados. Así es esto. :(
También me hubiera gustado poder presentar ahí "Aurora Boreal", mi largometraje, pero por reglamento del festival, no son elegibles las películas que ya han sido exhibidas en México, y mi película estuvo compitiendo en Guadalajara y, la semana pasada, en Guanajuato.

Como siempre, habrá invitados de primerísimo nivel, y una de las novedades más importantes de este año es que el corto que resulte ganador en Morelia se vuelve "Academy Award Qualifier", es decir, puede ser tomado en cuenta para una posible nominación al Oscar. Es como sacarse la lotería, nada fácil. Pero al menos ya tenemos nuestro billete / cachito comprado. :)

Me da muchísimo gusto también que esté seleccionada la película "Bajo la sal" de mi amigo Mario Muñoz (director de Productora Imaginaria, compañía productora para la que trabajo haciendo comerciales). También estarán el docu "Spital Zurich" de Miguel Múzquiz, trabajo del que ya les había platicado en este blog y "Cerca del olvido" de mi buen cuate Mariano Bouchot, muy interesante documental que tuve el gusto de ver en Guadalajara. En corto de ficción están también cortos de más cuates, como "Beyond them mexic bay" de Jean Marc Russeau, "Vago rumor de mares en zozobra" de Julián Hernández y "Paloma" de mi queridísimo Roberto Fiesco, a quien no puedo esperar para volver a ver... a la de YAAA!!!

Se llevará a cabo del 4 al 12 de Octubre. Tan pronto tengamos las fechas definitivas de proyección de "Edén" las publicaré.

SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE

= FESTIVALES =

Escribo con mucho gusto desde San Miguel de Allende, Guanjuato.
Nos encontramos acá mi mamá, mi hermana, Edgar y yo con motivo de la proyección de mi película Aurora Boreal en el XI Festival Internacional Expresión en Corto (selección oficial, competencia de operas primas).
Hoy la presentación es a las 18:00 hrs en MM Cinemas. La siguiente proyección es el próximo sábado en Guanajuato y ese mismo día tenemos rueda de prensa.
Si andan asistiendo al festival, me encantaría verlos por ahí; si no, manden sus buenas vibras pa' que todo salga chido!

De momento andamos de turistas. Yo nunca había venido a San Miguel de Allende y está precioso.

WORLD SHORT FILM AWARD INTERVIEW

= NOTAS / ENTREVISTAS =

Saludos!! Hace unos meses, nos informaron que mi corto "Edén" resultó ser uno de los cinco finalistas para el World Short Film Award of the Year (New York). Por este motivo los organizadores realizaron una entrevista a su servilleta que fue publicada en su website. Es de las entrevistas que más me he divertido respondiendo así que quise compartirla. Esto es un extracto.

What was the last thing you read?
The Divine Comedy (once again).

Favorite places, countries?
San Sebastián (Spain), Paris, Carcassonne (France) and Guanajuato (México).

What is your favorite food and drink?
I love mexican food (chiles en nogada, mole, tacos), also argentine meat, the pintxos from Donostia, french and italian food. I love desserts (strawberries with cream and all kinds of milky cakes and pies). There's no drink in this world I like more than a cold Coca-Cola.

Do you like Holidays?
Totally, I like them a lot. I don't believe in many things left, but if there's something I believe in after all, it's Christmas.

What is your life's biggest challenge?
To keep the ability of being creative. To keep enthusiastic even during not-so-good times. To never lose the interest and the ability to be surprised by small details. Basically, to remain alive at least until I actually die. ;-) (Not as easy as it sounds).

If you could travel through time, in which period of history would you like to live?
I would go back to the 90´s with a new ability to really appreciate how wonderful they were. I would also like to go to the medieval times.

Globalization: good or bad?
Culturally incredibly good since this is the first attempt to create a common denomination that may define us all as the "human kind" beyond the idelogical differences but yet, keeping our own identity. Economically, a disaster for some countries.

What would be a "perfect moment" for you?
A kiss from the person I love. To watch an aurora boralis display. To watch a tear dropped by someone after watching a film I made.

What is Film for you?
Storytelling and emotion sharing.

What inspired you to become a filmmaker?
The need to tell stories about worlds that are not necesarily like the one I live in. The possibility to create new worlds where magic does exist and where impossible things can actually happen.

When did you start making films?
When I was 12 yeas old. It was an adaptation of Charles Dickens´ "A Christmas Carol".

What was the last film you saw that you liked?
Eraserhead.

If you could send only one film out to the Universe to tell aliens who we are, which film would that be?
The Wizard of Oz. :-)

As a cultural ambassador of your country: If you wanted to show one film made in your country, which film would that be?
Luis Buñuel's "Los Olvidados". Or "Pan's Labirynth" eventhough it was not shot in my country, it is considered a mexican production.

The one characteristic a film director must have:
Being extremely sensitive to every single detail surrounding him. Every sound, smell, sight, texture, taste. A film director must be able to find beauty and poetry in every detail.

For me short film is:
Stories that don't need so many minutes to be told.

Filmmaking is like:
Creating worlds with their own rules, looks and communication dynamics.

In terms of the filmmaking process, which is the best part of making a film for you?
The incredible experience of watching the images, moments and characters that were only in my mind at first comming alive. Then they're not only drawings of a storyboard. That's the moment when it all becomes real, it stops being a project and becomes a true fictional reality.

In terms of the filmmaking process, which is the worst part of making a film for you?
That very moment when the film stock is running out, the spotlight is broken, someone is injured and the sun is fading away when there are still 6 shots I need to shoot. That´s the worst of it.

Who do you like to work with? (Producer, Actor…)
Meryl Streep!

What is your biggest dream as a filmmaker?
There are many of them. To make a lot of movies, mostly good ones. That making movies is what I do for living. But specially to create a style of my own, a visual and dramatic style that defines all of my work and which I could be identified for. And of course, to work with Meryl Streep. ;-)

Imagine that it is 2020 and you are a very successful filmmaker. What would be "success" for you in your film carrier?
To keep on. Shooting a good film every year or two. Being profitable for my producers without compromising my style and need of expression due a commercial request.

What do you think about the future of Film?
Due the constant change of technology, not only films but most of entertainment industry is going to have to change as well as a part of this evolution. Digital media has brought to us the posibility to shoot many more movies every year but also has changed the way they're screened, the way they're watched and the way they sound. We all need to be prepared, both as an audience and as filmmakers to deal with these constant changes. And above all this, we must be prepared to remain
creative and propositive. The art itself as a need of communication is not changing at all, only the tools we use to make it.

"AURORA BOREAL" EN EXPRESION EN CORTO

Ya es oficial la participación de mi película "Aurora Boreal" en la edición número 11 del Festival Interancional de Cine "Expresión en Corto" en Guanajuato.
"Aurora Boreal" forma parte de la Selección Oficial en competencia, en la sección de óperas primas.
Éste es el segundo año consecutivo que participamos: el año pasado estuvieron en Selección Oficial mis cortometrajes "El Joven Telarañas" (competencia internacional) y mi corto "Edén" (que obtuvo el premio a Mejor Cortometraje Mexicano).

El año pasado el festival fue una gran experiencia, porque además del premio, tuve la oportunidad de saludar a Tim Burton, uno de los directores que más admiro.
En el festival me tartaron muy bien, la experiencia fue muy agradable y el apoyo e impuslo que el festival le ha dado a mi trabajo ha sido muy, muy importante. Y estoy muy agradecido por ello.

Las fechas de proyección son:
- DOMINGO 20 DE JULIO, 18:00 HRS. MM CINEMAS (SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE)
- SÁBADO 26 DE JULIO A LAS 16:00 HRS. TEATRO PRINCIPAL (GUANAJUATO CAPITAL)

"LA DANZA DE LAS SALAMANDRAS", EL LARGOMETRAJE

Quiero utilizar este blog para hacer este anuncio:

Ya es oficial que mi segundo largometraje será una adaptación (no un remake) de mi cortometraje "La danza de las salamandras", y llevará el mismo título.

Retoma la historia de Santiago Reyes, el protagonista del cortometraje y su viaje errático por un edificio. Toma muchos de los elementos del corto, sin embargo, deja de lado la complejidad simbólica y se concentra más en una trama de conspiración en la que el protagonista se ve envuelto, internándose en un laberinto del que lucha por escapar. Paralelamente, la película muestra el despertar accidentado a la vida sexual de un chico homosexual y el punto de unión en la historia de los dos personajes.

Hasta ahora, lo que sabemos es que una vez más Edgar Barrón será el productor de este largometraje y se espera que la película se filme en el primer semestre del año entrante. Será filmada en 35 mm, tendrá una duración aproximada de 100 minutos, se filmará en la ciudad de México y existe la posibilidad de que se realice mediante una co-producción con otro país.

Iré dando más detalles conforme se vayan definiendo.
